Bass Communion
Bass Communion is a side project of Steven Wilson, best known for his lead role in the rock band Porcupine Tree and also of the bands No-Man, Blackfield, and Incredible Expanding Mindfuck (IEM). Bass Communion’s albums have often featured collaborations from other musicians, including Robert Fripp of King Crimson, saxophonist Theo Travis, Bryn Jones (also known as Muslimgauze), and Vidna Obmana. The records released under the name Bass Communion are in an ambient or electronic vein – lengthy drone-heavy compositions. They come about as experiments in texture made from processing the sound of real instruments and field recordings. The recordings have been released through specialist labels Headphone Dust, Burning Shed and Tonefloat, amongst others.
Minimal electronics in the form of alien strangeness, slow morphing darkened soundscapes that are alive with organic life. Deep ambience in the vein of high doses of psychedelics mixed with ever evolving beatless melodies. The last track provides 24 minutes of drifting hypnotic melodic bliss, one of the few uplifting tracks on this album. It seems to wander aimlessly in its own drugged out state. Beautiful music to just close your eyes and dream. file under: Ambient
Factory pressed CD edition (previously an on demand CDR) comes in a beautiful Japanese style mini LP card sleeve, with brand new Carl Glover designed artwork. A CD EP featuring a 20 minute drone piece recorded during the Ghosts on Magnetic Tape sessions. Slow, undulating, dark textures.
The only conventional instrument is piano performing dissonant notes and manipulated to give a beautiful sense of loss. Pure ambience is the second instrument here. Footsteps, effects also run amok, giving texture sounds that imply it is all taking place in the room next to you or beneath you. This is mournful minimalism, executed with experimental and avant-garde methods. Infinitely haunting, but spiritual and moving, as well. A unique brand of ambient music, done with class and style. Two long tracks on CD, as well as on 5.1 surround sound DVD. file under: Ambient
Bass Communion is a project dedicated to Steven Wilson’s recordings in an ambient, drone, and/or electronic vein. Most of the pieces are experiments in texture made from processing recordings of real instruments and field recordings. The atmosphere of the music has tended towards the dark and melancholic, but expressed with an almost zen like beauty. The decline of these pieces is more important than their buildup, just as much as the decay of a sound is awarded priority over his attack. Even though looping and repetition play a vital role, especially with regards to the strong live feeling of the works, so, too, do variation and subtle divergence.
Title track was recorded live in Antwerp in November 2008. Fusilier taken from the split 7 inch given away to attendees of the concert. Packaged in mini LP gatefold sleeve edition
